Success in wealth management usually gets measured in dollars managed or new accounts opened. Justin Nelson, Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, measures it differently.
Nelson leads a twenty-person team at JP Morgan responsible for more than $15 billion in client assets, yet he points to something else entirely when asked what he values most about his job.
Relationships Over Returns
“One of the things that I really enjoy about my job is working closely with families where we have built 20+ year relationships,” Justin Nelson JP Morgan said. Those long partnerships, he explains, let him help clients through both financial decisions and the emotional weight that often comes with them.
That philosophy also shapes who Nelson brings onto his team. Justin Nelson hires people who show genuine curiosity about finance and treat clients with humility, often recruiting from psychology, biology, and engineering programs instead of sticking to finance majors alone. Nelson’s own education followed a similar mix, with degrees in chemistry and economics from Tufts University and an MBA from Columbia University.
“You really get to know people, and you can help them on both a financial and emotional level,” Nelson said. Nearly three decades into his JP Morgan career, that kind of connection, built slowly over years of trust, still matters more to him than any single transaction, a standard that continues to shape how his team serves its clients today.
Justin Nelson admits that dollars managed and new accounts opened still get tracked internally, and results remain part of how any team at JP Morgan is judged. What he pushes his own twenty person team to remember is that the families behind those numbers are watching for something else too, whether their advisor genuinely understands what the wealth is actually for.
