Shelton Haynes has been an essential contributor to the growth and prosperity of Roosevelt Island and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). Haynes has been a stalwart supporter of the local community during his stay on the island, particularly during his tenure as the first African-American President of the Rhode Island Oceanic Corporation (RIOC).

Haynes spent his whole life on Roosevelt Island, where he was born and raised. He has devoted his life to the island and the people there. His accomplishments at the Bronx High School of Science and the City College of New York, from which he graduated with great pride, are well known. He has worked for the city in a variety of capacities during the course of his more than 20 years of expertise in municipal administration.

Haynes was given the role of President of the Rhode Island Office of Commerce (RIOC), the governmental body in charge of the administration and growth of the island, in 2013. The RIOC has completed several significant projects thanks to Haynes’ direction. These projects include the development of new parks and public spaces, the establishment of a new ferry system, and the introduction of a complimentary shuttle service. Haynes has also had a significant role in accelerating economic growth on the island, resulting in the establishment of new companies and new employment opportunities for the inhabitants of the area.

Haynes has been an involved member of the community and has held various critical positions in addition to the work he has done for RIOC. In addition to his current position as President of the Roosevelt Island Residents Association, he has previously held positions on the local school board and the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association.
